Team building and Time Management

“Time is the scarcest resource; and unless it is managed, nothing else can be manged.” – Peter Drucker.

If you’re like me you recognize the need for better time management.  You may have read some books with some helpful tips. Somehow you still manage to waste an awful lot of the precious time you’re given.  You may have heard the old saying “you can always make more money if you know how, but we all still only have 24 hrs each day”. Time is our most valuable resource due to it’s limited nature.   The richest and most powerful people in the world have the same 24 hrs each day that you and I have. Many of them are no smarter that anyone else, with one key exception…   They managed / leveraged their time better than we have.  I, like you, am still working on implementing many of these techniques in my daily and weekly routines.  As I work on getting better in these areas I want to share them with you.

Here is the good news…  You and I both CAN change today!  We can choose to start managing our time better right now.  If you are looking for better results for yourself and your team there are some specific principles that we can implement for better time management in every area of your life and each of your team members or staff members’ lives.

In no particular order, Here are some things you can start doing today.

Game Panning and Goal Setting:   If you spend an hour or two at the beginning of each week or before you start a major project, you could easily save 10-20 hours of unproductive work. Setting specific goals will help you be far more effective toward achieving those goals.  Here’s the key parts of setting goals: When setting goals you should have them written down. when you writing them down it’s helpful to be specific.  use this formula to help…  from what (current scoreboard/starting point), to what (the desired outcome/goal) , by when(set a date to have it accomplished by). If you have larger goals it may help to break down the goal into smaller “bite sized” chunks.  Set mile markers or checkpoints along the way.  Here’s an important piece – provide a realist reward for hitting each checkpoint and end goal.

Intentional improvement: Making/planning time (I suggest starting with at least an hour each day) to read in a specific attempt to improve yourself and your team is a big part of this process. (Bible reading, prayer and meditation should be a part of this process) while reading ask yourself  “Can I make changes in any area of my life to get better results? Is there something I can change about myself that would yield better results for my team? What are the major issues that I or my team are facing?” Then, while reading be looking for answers to your questions. You’ll be amazed at how quickly those answers will come compared to the time it takes to find the answers without taking the time to read. Listening to great audio CD’s is another big part of this.

Increase Reading Speed:  According to the Dale Carnegie group, “The average reading speed is two hundred words per minute. Most people have to read for at least two hours a day for work.  A speed reading course can double your reading speed.  That gives you another hour to do more productive things.” I might mention here also that you should be reading outside of work also.  If you’re taking time to read this I can assume that you are one of the few individuals that actually read regularly.  I congratulate you for that distinction!  You are among the top 10% of people in the world who do so!

Seek advice:  During the process of making changes inevitably some changes will work and others will not. By asking questions and seeking advice from others, you can save a lot of valuable time doing the wrong things or perhaps doing the right things in the wrong way.  Having/finding a mentor who is well removed from your situation, who is better able and willing to provide objective advice is highly recommendable.

Patience is STILL a virtue:  Making changes in your live and wanting to see changes in your team right away is perfectly natural.  Try to give yourself and others a little grace.  Making lasting changes will take time.  It takes time to see the changes you make become a reality and than it takes more time to see those changes become part of the fundamental and foundational qualities of your organization.  So just practice being patient.

Embrace Adventure and New Ideas: Don’t be afraid of looking at other opportunities, career paths, entrepreneurial ventures, or new partnerships.   Make it a point to stretch yourself, step outside of your comfort zone (which is rarely comfortable) or what I prefer to call your familiar zone. be intentional about trying new things. Challenge yourself to try at least one new way of doing things each day.  You may find that something works far better than you anticipated.

Ask For Help:  One of the most important Time management tools is this principle of delegation. Don’t be afraid of asking for or hiring help.  Many successful people understand that there are some things that they alone should be doing.  So many of the tasks that take up your time could be and should be given to someone else to do.  If someone else can do the task 70-80% as well as you, they should be doing it instead of you. Answering phones and checking and responding to most e-mails are tasks that many mangers, pastors, and other leaders try to do themselves.  Free up your time to focus on the things that ONLY YOU can/should be doing! Don’t let your ego get in the way of asking for help.

Create and Manage a TO-DO list: This is the single most important element, that if utilized properly will catapult your results higher than you can imagine! There’s a lot of important details that will help you become far more effective in this area. This is probably the single biggest multiplier when it comes to being good with managing your time! Let’s look at what it takes to succeed in this area.

  • Make the list:  write a list of all the things you need to do tomorrow and in the next week. Think about  the various tasks, priorities, activities, promises you made and people you need to spend time with or have important conversations with.
  • Important versus urgent: Figure out which items are most important and which ones are most urgent, maybe an item could be both important and urgent. Think about how one may effect the others?
  • Assign a rank: There are a couple of popular methods most people use.  See which works best for you.
    1.  A,B,C ranking:  “A” Tasks that have the highest priority or urgency.  “B” Tasks that are moderately important but can wait until after “A” tasks. “C” tasks are the lowest importance level and can be done after “A” and “B” tasks are completed.
    2. Ranking by number: This is my preferred method.  (Recall the story of Mr. Ivy Lee giving this technique to Mr. Charles Schwab, President of the Bethlehem Steele Co. over 100 years ago, after 2 weeks of implementation Schwab paid Lee $25,000.  He thought it was that the advice was THAT valuable!) Lee told Schwab to write down on a 3″x5″ card, the top 5 (I’ve seen several sources that say 5 and others say it was 6) most important things needing to be done tomorrow. Then Lee told him to number those things with 1 being the top most priority, 2 being the next important, and so on and so on.   (Personal side note: things that are urgent but not important should be delegated to someone else.  if someone can do that job 80% as well as you, you should be letting that person do the job that takes you away from the most important tasks.) Lee continued by saying that everything possible that can be done on item 1 should be done before moving on to task number 2. You should do everything that can be done to accomplish task number 2 before moving on to task number 3, etc. etc.
  • Reward yourself:  It is vitally important that you reward yourself appropriately for accomplishments made toward your goals.  This reinforces your psychological belief in your ability to accomplish the end goal and in return, makes you more effective.  Don’t forget to reward your team members in the fashion.  Help your team members understand how much you appreciate their efforts.  Be genuine in your approbation, however.  Your team will know if you’re being fake!

Triple-A Formula For Attracting People (Part 2)- Validation

Let me set the stage for a moment:  Almost every major book on the topics of leadership, management, success, and personal growth has “listening to great audio recordings” listed as a key component toward helping any individual achieve more, do more, and be more in life. I stumbled into this information a few years ago began to apply it in my life. I  now listen to a lot of audio recordings throughout each day to gain insight on specific topics, and also to get myself (that sinister, critical, and negative inner voice) to shut-up long enough to hear some positive truth and encouraging information.  One such audio recording I was listening to a few days ago had a commentary from the late Jackie Lewis.  She mentioned a blog post by Orrin Woodward who was recently ranked by Inc. Magazine as one of the world’s top 20 leadership and management experts.

I loved this video and thought it was a great follow up to my prior post: Triple-A Formula For Attracting People. I suggest you read that original post before you continue.

Orrin’s post is great! Take a few minutes to read his words and watch the attached video.  Post your thoughts comments and answers to the following questions below.  Have you ever experienced this kind of validation? (If so, see Orrin’s assignment below.) Have you ever given this kind of validation?  How did it make you feel afterward in either case?

I watched the most incredible 15 minute video of my entire life.  The lessons in this short 15 minutes cover a range from joy to depression, victories to setbacks, naive positivity to chosen positivity, self to others, individual to team, living small to living large, hopeless to hopeful, taking to giving, paycheck to significance, and many more. 

 

The longer I live, the more I realize the essential hunger inside of everyone to be accepted, approved and appreciated.  If we, as human beings, could all learn to focus on others before focusing on ourselves, we would overcome so many of the problems that plague our society today.  If we desire acceptance in life, then we must give acceptance.  If we desire approval in life, then we must give approval.  If we desire appreciation in life, then we must give appreciation.  If we desire validation in life then we must give validation and if we desire smiles then give others your smile. 

 

I know people can accuse me, an engineer, of losing my rationality and falling into sentimentality, but I know what I speak is true.  A sincerely thought out and spoken or written comment can fuel a person for a week.  I know many high achievers and it is as true for them as it is for a young child.  Recognition: grown men die for it and babies cry for it.  Do not hoard this precious gift.  Do not feel that complimenting and praising others takes from you.  Appreciation is one of the few gifts that the more you give it away, the more it returns to you.  You will gather more bees with honey than vinegar.  There is a shortage of honey and stockpiles of vinegar in life.  This short film has inspired me to share my thanks with you.

 

I want to thank all of my friends and family for the many kind words and encouraging statements.  I will never be able to share how much they have meant to me over the last year.  The world tends to beat the joy out of you, but you still have the choice of whether to surrender your joy.  If you lost your joy in 2008, then choose now to reclaim it by giving away joy to others.  Start a virtuous cycle of sincere praise and appreciation and let’s change the world one life at a time!  Can you imagine if every person at every open encourage the other people at our opens like Hugh Newman?  The Team would be well past one million people in no time at all!  God Bless, Orrin Woodward

You Don’t Have to Get Good to Get Started, You Have to Get Started to Get Good!

“You don’t have to get good to get started, you have to get started to get good.” I love that quote.  I’m not sure who said it first but I heard it first from Leadership expert Orrin Woodward (Listed at #20 in Inc. Magazine’s Top 50 Leadership and management Experts) The truth of this statement rings louder the more people I talk to.

Orrin Woodward’s story alone should be enough to prove the statement true. But let’s not stop there. Chris Brady (inc.com’s #39 expert) who was mentored by Oriin Woodward has an equally impressive story. Having heard their story by them on audio or in person, I can only describe what they have said. Each of them started with a dream of a better life, an idea that drove them and many others to accomplish massive success. That success did not come easy however, Because neither Orrin or Chris had any decent people skills to talk about. Both were quintessential engineers with pocket protectors and color coordinated pens. Orrin quotes what someone wrote in his high school yearbook “arguing, arguing, early and late. If a line were crooked, he’d argue it straight.” Does that sound like a man born to lead thousands of people? No way!

When I hear men like Orrin Woodward, Chris Brady, Dan Hawkins, Bill Lewis, George Guzzardo, Tim Marks, Claude Hamilton (and of course their amazing wives) and so many other incredible leaders within the Life Leadership organization tell their stories of dream and struggle toward victory, I see hope. I see hope like thousands of other leaders across the country and across the world because I know that I can achieve my goals and dreams just like they have. So can you. As the old saying goes “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

The more I learn, the more I realize I need to learn. I don’t have all the answers, for that matter I may not have any answers. The one thing I do know is that we all have the ability to learn. We can and we do every single day! The real question for you is this: Are you going to make a decision to get started doing whatever you know in your heart you should be starting or are you going to complain about not being smart enough or talented enough or whatever else, enough? The choice is yours!

You can live in fear or you can decide to get started and learn what you need to learn along the way. Think about the first time you did anything. -Swing a bat at a baseball -Tie your shoes -crack an egg -read, write or spell How many things did you ever do perfectly the first time and every time thereafter? None! You have to learn, You have to practice, You have to seek help from others who have done it before. DON’T LET FEAR HOLD YOU BACK! Get into action today. You can do it! You can do it because you can learn. GO! DO! BECOME! Achieve your dreams! Follow your passions! Don’t forget to ask for help along the way.

You have to get started to get good!

So DECIDE to START today!

Why Should You Pursue You Purpose?

I saw this video on Facebook and I thought it was such a great follow up to my post “Leadership, Where Do I Start?”

Before you watch the video (If you have not already seen it) let me ask you a few very important questions… Are you passionate about anything in your life?  Have you figured out what your purpose is? Why should you pursue your purpose? With those questions in mind, Take the next 6 minutes (roughly) and watch this video.

If that video struck a chord in you the same way it did me, then we can take the next step.
To answer the question “why should you pursue your purpose?”, you have to first recognize that you HAVE a purpose! To recognize that you have a purpose is to also recognize that you were MADE for a purpose.  This leads us to recognize further that if we were made, then there must be a MAKER.  That maker is the God who created the heavens and the Earth!  That Maker, God himself, Yahweh, The Great I AM created you, knows you, loves you, and wants to do great things through you!

The God of the universe loves you like no other!  He also loves the people in your sphere of influence!  Only you can reach those individuals.  Only you can show them hope for a better tomorrow.  How better to do that than to live your own life in a relentless pursuit of the passions that He placed within you?  If you don’t, who will?
Just look around you. Look at all the friends and family and coworkers you see living their lives in the doldrums, busy, living paycheck-to-paycheck, just getting by, in debt up their eyeballs.  Maybe that’s you today.  Maybe it’s time for you to step up and lead.  Maybe you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired.  You can and you should make a decision TODAY to change. To take charge. To start living intentionally for excellence!   Congratulations!  Today is a new day!  CARPE DIEM!  Seize the day!  Because others are counting on you!  That’s why you should pursue your purpose!  Now go out and DO IT!

What can a 3 yr old teach me about sales and leadership?

Have you ever been taught something or informed of how to do something better and think you’ve got it understood?  You walk away from the meeting or the conversation and say to yourself “I’ve got this.” or “I can do that.” or maybe “That’s such a no-brain-er.”?  Then you find out later through what appears to be a completely unrelated situation that you didn’t “really” get it at all. You find yourself learning the same lesson or principle through some silly event and suddenly you have that epiphany or “ah ha” moment!  That’s what happened to me this morning!

I enjoy being a stay-at-home dad.  I absolutely love getting up every morning and eating breakfast with me kids. This morning was just like any other morning when my 3 year old daughter came into my bedroom and woke me up saying “Daddy, it’s day. It’s day”. We got some breakfast and then IT happened when I was trying to help my daughter get out of her pajamas and get dressed for the day. Person-question

She was half dressed and decided to go sit on her bed and not get the rest of her clothes on.  After a couple minutes of trying to coax her, I finally said “OK” I put her clothes down “I’ll take ’em”.  She immediately popped out of bed and wanted to finish getting dressed.

You may be thinking at this point “what on earth could this possibly teach me?”  My answer is this:  Posture!

Here’s the deal. I thought I knew about posture. I thought I had posture. In many cases I did.  But as I look back on various meetings or sales calls in the past I can see where I lost posture.   Maybe you’re sitting there at your desk reading this and you’re thinking about the sales call you had yesterday or last week where you lost your posture too.

Are you trying to sell your product with an attitude that says “I NEED you to buy this so that I can meet my goal”? Maybe you are in a desperate situation where you actually NEED to make that sale in order  to make rent.  Whatever the case may be, it all boils down to POSTURE.

Here’s the principle:  Stop NEEDing people to buy. Be willing to take the item off the table. Adopt an abundance mentality and ditch that old poverty/scarcity mentality.  Even if you make the sale but loose your posture, you’ll never make another sale to that person or get a referral from them

As a parent, I think we instinctively understand this principle and use it all the time!  Why, then would we shrink and loose our posture at work or when dealing others in the office?

Try thinking about it this way: You have the tastiest, ooey-gooiest, Freshest, warmest Chocolate chip cookies that you’re trying to sell or give away. They indeed be the absolute best cookies in the world.  One person says “yes” then the next person says “no”.  What do you do when that person says “no”?  do you drop your posture and start begging?  “oh, come on. please?  They’re really good, I promise you’ll like it.  These are the best cookies.”   Just reading that should make you feel disgusted.

If you had posture in the same instance you might respond in a slightly different way.  Something like this perhaps: ” No, really? why do you say that?…(listen for the answer) Allergic to chocolate, no kidding?…  What kind of cookies do you like? Which ones are your favorite”… That’s great. I’ve tried those before. The’re pretty good too. I don’t have any of those cookies at the moment but I’ll be sure to let you know when I do. Have a great day.”  And then take your cookies away.  Maybe if you’ve made a friend during the process you might see them purchase your cookies for a friend or family member.  You might even get a referral to contact friends and family directly.

Your posture makes all the difference in the world!

So, wrap this up all nice and pretty in a big bow for you, Here’s what a 3yr old can teach us about sales and leadership.

1. KNOW that you have (the cookies) what they need or want

2. Be willing to take it away (and do it at the right time)

3. Stop losing posture by begging (you don’t NEED them)

4. Adopt an abundance mentality (there are plenty of other customers / opportunities)

Leadership, Where do I start?

When it comes to the subject of leadership it can be hard to figure out where to start, especially if you’re new to the subject.

Resolved-Book

One of the best books I’ve ever read on the subject of leadership is RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions for LIFE By Inc. Magazine’s top 20 leadership expert Orrin Woodward! In his book, Orrin discusses leadership through 13 resolutions divided into three phases.  The three phases of leadership build on each other; first, through private achievements then moving into public achievements and finally culminating with leadership achievements. In this post I’d like to discuss the first resolution as a foundation for the rest;  Resolution 1: Purpose.  Before I continue I want to inform you, the reader that I am not writing this as a person who has this totally figured out.  Rather, I am writing this because I am in the process of figuring these things out just like you.

Resolution 1: I resolve to discover my God-given purpose.  I know that when my potential, Passions, and Profits intersect, my purpose is revealed.

“Sadly, many will live their entire life without purpose, allowing life to lead them rather than leading their lives.” –Orrin Woodward  We must first find the place where potential and passions intersect with profits in order to find our purpose. God has placed within each person specific passions and potential to use those passions. When you can find or create an income (profits) to be able to do the things you’re passionate about; That is where your purpose can be found and accomplished.

WHY?  Why work on improving in my leadership skills.  Why go through all the tough trials to get better?  Why put myself (and potentially others) through the hardships I know I will face?   These are important questions that must be answered before one can move forward in his/her leadership journey.   These are foundational questions.

Without a purpose, a dream, a bigger driving force, there will be no reason to make the tough or even the small, daily decisions ahead.  There will be no overarching, higher purpose to propel you forward. Stephen Covey called it the “big rocks first” principle. Steve Jobs called it a “hedgehog” purpose/principle.  By aligning your decisions with your purpose you can make better decisions to propel you toward your purpose faster.  This also makes decision making much easier.  Orrin quotes Steven Covey in this chapter on purpose; “…If something is important, it contributes to your mission, your values, your high priority goals.”

Time Management is made easier by clearly understanding your own mission, values, and high priority goals.  One of the best time management tools I’ve ever used is described through a conversation between Charles Schwab of the Bethlehem Steel Company and Mr. Ivy Lee who is considered by most to be corporate America’s first public relations man in the early twentieth century.  Ivy Lee called on Schwab and through a 25 minute conversation tells him to write down at the end of every day the top five things that need to be done tomorrow, giving each a numbered priority.  Lee then tells Schwab to work on the most important thing on that list untill it is finished or nothing else can be done toward it.  Schwab is told to complete this pattern for each of the top 5 most important things each and every day.  Lee’s parting words to Schwab were “spend the last 5 minutes of every working day making out a “must-do” list for thge next day’s tasks. After you’ve convinced yourself of the worth of this method, have your people try it. Try it out as long as you wish and then send me a check for what YOU think it’s worth”  After 2 weeks of implementing this “top 5 to-do list” method, Schwab send Lee a check for $25, 000!  At $1,000 per hour, that’s a 25 minutes well invested, don’t you think?

Understanding your God-given purpose, your values, and your high priority goals will help you say “no” to the good so that you can say “yes” to the great.  It will help you replace the urgent with the important.  It will guide you through each and every day to help you live the life you’ve always wanted!

So begin today, take the next week if you must, and start asking yourself the important questions.  Figure out where your passion and potential intersect with profits and you will be well on your way toward living your life intentionally for excellence!

Becoming Referable (By Tim Marks)

Becoming Referable

It’s true that success in business and in LIFE comes down in many ways to who you know.  This applies in several ways.  First, it may mean a mentorship perspective, where knowing a successful mentor can help you avoid the proverbial landmines of personal experience while figuring out the process to success alone.  It matters who you associate with.  Robert Kiyosaki teaches that our income is the average of the five people with whom we associate most often.  And, it matters when building a business community, because a new friend can connect you to their friends.

You want to make sure that people want to make that critical introduction of YOU to the people they know.  How can you help inspire them to do so?  By becoming REFERABLE.  Here are 7 key points to get you started!

1.  Always be looking for opportunities to expand your network.   If you aren’t meeting people, you won’t know anyone who WOULD refer you!  To become referable, keep making new friends.  We attract what we focus on.  If you have a goal of connecting with people, you will notice those golden opportunities when they present themselves.  Be on the lookout for clubs and associations that create opportunities to make connections, such as the local Rotary Club, Toastmasters, or various Meetup groups in your area.

2. Have character and integrity.  The minute you show yourself to be untrustworthy, no one of character will refer you.  They will point you out to their friends, but only as a warning.  “Don’t go near that guy,” they will say ominously.  “He cheated me out of a business deal.”  Some guys so crooked you could screw them in the ground.  A small business owner operates from a base of profit motive and a commitment to provide a valuable service or product. A business owner communicates truth using direct and indirect means. You reveal your commitment to honesty when you pay your company bills and employees. When you file taxes, report to your investors and make commitments to your customers, you communicate virtue. Looked at from another angle, failing to meet your corporate responsibilities establishes a climate of mistrust and potential illegality.  Don’t cook the books, cheat on your taxes, gossip about people, break your word, neglect a commitment, or speak negatively about others when they aren’t present to defend themselves.  Never let it be said of you, “Watch out for that person.”  Make sure that you carry yourself with such a high degree of integrity that people would do a business deal on a handshake with you.

3. Be interested in the other person and their job and company. We naturally tend to like people who like us.  Maybe we think they’ve got good taste!  Joking aside, if you have a meeting with someone, show your interest in them by following up in a punctual timeframe.  After you’ve made a new business contact, make sure within a week or two that you’ve called them to touch base.  If the contact is a former client or just someone you’ve talked to before, now might be the perfect time to ask for a referral. If it’s a prospect you’re calling, maybe you can set up an appointment to have coffee and find out if their plans might include using your services.  Take an interest in people and what’s going on in their lives.  For example, if a client mentioned they were working on an important project, give them a personal call to check in and see how the project is going.  If you are working with them, always ask if there is anything more you can do to serve them and their business.  If you are fortunate enough to have had business referred to you, call the person who referred the business and thank them!  Take the time to try to learn more about their current activities so you can refer business to them.  When you take an interest in helping others, kind deeds tend to circle back to us.

4.  Track who you meet.  When you meet someone for the first time, take a second to jot down any important information that they brought up in the conversation.  When I meet people, after the conversation is finished and I walk away, if I have their business card I like to pause for a second and jot notes on the back of it about our conversation.  If I caught family information, career info, personal hobbies, or even a reminder of how and where we met, it will help me to show a sincere interest in them when I phone back.  If they don’t use business cards, take a minute and jot some notes in your cellphone about them.  It’s not only valuable to do this for the follow up, but for the long-term relationship.  If they mentioned their birthday or anniversary date, make a note of that!  How amazing would it be to send them a note of congratulation on their birthday or anniversary.  It’s so rare that you will stand out from the crowd.  A good habit is to list  people to stay in touch with. Include anyone who has given you business in the last 12 monthsas well as any other prospects you’ve connected with recently. Send them cards on the next holiday.

5.  Look sharp!  If you want people to refer you to others, be presentable.  Dress in a way that would make them feel proud to introduce you to the most important people in their lives, to the people in their inner circle.  Don’t dress like your peers; dress like the people who have accomplished what you want to accomplish.  It’s amazing how simple grooming and basic hygiene can be missed, but if you want people to refer you, you had better shower, shave, brush your team, polish your shoes, and remove the dog hair!  Look sharp to become sharp.

6.  Practice excellent people skills.  Simply be courteous toward everyone whose path you cross.  Four basic principles of people skills and integrity are:  a, Show up on time.  b. Do what you say.  c. Finish what you start.  d. Say please and thank you.  While these may seem basic, I am always shocked when I meet grown men and women who literally fail at these four things on a regular basis.  You don’t have to sound like a fake news caster and sound “polished” to have people skills; you just to see the inherent value and worth in all people and treat them accordingly.

7. Have a positive attitude! Nobody wants to even be around someone who has a bad attitude, much less network with them. If you want to be referable, be pleasant and friendly.  If you light up the room when you walk out, I am talking to you right now!  Start learning to smile more often.  See the good in each person and each situation.  When problems arise, try to seek the solution to the problem rather than moaning and complaining that something isn’t going right.  Choose to laugh and shrug off the minor inconveniences of the day.  The people who might want to refer you are fighting their own battle with the day.  Aspire to be the “friction free” team mate who shows respect for everyone on the court.  If you lift people’s spirits when you are around them, you are on the fast-track to becoming referable!

Apply these seven principles every day, and the people in your business and your LIFE will refer you.  Keep learning, growing and getting referred!

Uncommon Results Only Follow Uncommon Work

Our world is full of examples of people in our lifetime and throughout history who chose to be uncommon long enough to see uncommon results!  Whether in business or family or personal growth you can achieve the success if you learn one simple (notice I did not say “easy”) principle. Maybe you are struggling to see the results that you think you deserve already. Maybe you’ve been kicked off the proverbial horse and beaten down to the point that you have trouble even believing that success, however you define it, is even possible.  Maybe you’re the person who has been near the top in your profession but can never seem to break through that glass ceiling. perhaps you have tried to hit certain goals or win a sales or production contest but just can’t seem to get it done.  If you can relate to what I’m saying, I’m talking to YOU!

Talent is over-rated!  You may have most of the talent in your group or team but perhaps there is someone who has less talent than you stealing your spotlight, right?   Why is that happening? Why does it continue to happen? Because that person has hunger. I’m not referring to a hunger for food.  I’m referring to hunger as a dream, a reason why or a desire that fuels an uncommon work ethic.  A hungry person will have far more success than a talented person who is not hungry.  Hunger beats talent every time!

If you want success in any area, you must be willing to do the work.  Let me say that in a different way. In order to achieve uncommon success you must be willing to be uncommon. The common person will not work hard enough for long enough to achieve the success that you will achieve if you are willing to put in the work and preparation.

In addition  to the work ethic  there is one other principle that must be mentioned.  I think we have al heard the term ” there is no I in team.” but have you also heard the acronym for team?  TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More!   If you are running for a goal all by yourself or you think you alone can “carry” your team (even if your results usually do), you can truly achieve more if you start working as a team.  Everyone does more when you are working truly as a unit.  A word of caution: don’t be a prima donna!  Don’t try to be “the guy” or gal.  even if you are, if you give the credit away at every opportunity you will find yourself surrounded by friends and team mates working harder for the team goal and achieving far more than you could ever achieve on your own!

I love this clip from the movie miracle in which Herb Brooks, coaching the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team teaches these principles in a very powerful way.  Take a moment to watch this clip (about 7 minutes long)  and then answer a couple of questions afterward.

Do you know who you’re playing for?

Are you playing for the name on the back of your jersey or the name on the front of your jersey?

Ae you wearing the right jersey?

Do you have a good coach who will push you and challenge you to do your absolute best?

Are you doing the same things the rest of your team is doing? Are you a “common” team member?

If you are the coach or leader of an organization are you pushing and challenging your team toward uncommon work?

 

You CAN become uncommon. I love LIFE-Leadership because it is the best program to take an uncommon person and make a winner out them!  Better information applied will bring better results!

The American Dream

The American Dream  written by Ashley Beaubien

The “American Dream” is a phrase that has so much meaning behind it. America started as a vision. It was meant to be a Biblically mapped society run on Godly business principles, leading to solid economic value with

entrapenuership that would stem from families with strong moral conducts. It was this idea that lived and breathed freedom from tyranny. Everyone was educated in the affairs of thier towns. They were also aware of thier rights and felt this deep sense of responsibility but most importantly, a sense of dignity in themselves, as they trusted and relied on their Lord. They had equppied thier minds with Godly truth and acted on it. America was a nation to be free from bondage and poverty,  it was designed for all of these aspects to run together.

 

Now what do they call the “American Dream” today? Well unfortantly they call it worshipping money, they equate it with chasing and having things, especially if you think money is important. How dangerous for a society to not understand that everything was designed to work together. infact how deflating to not be able to teach the same nation that serves a perfect magnificant God, that its very means of keeping itself from economic bondage and slavery as the Bible teaches, is in fact not evil, but a tool for the kingdom. The way we view money comes down to the heart of man. I strongly believe that If more people would protect thier minds and judge thier hearts verses thier feelings that this would start to fix motives. Less hearts at war mean more Godly and pure hearts with positive world changing, society building motives. Before tv and countless mindless distractions, people used to understand this. Protecting our minds now is how we equip for this modern day America. Its easy to be comfortable.

 

The “American Dream” is the vision that all men can live in freedom. There are two types of freedom, spiritual and ecomonical. Money plays a huge role in the ecomical as the Bible clearly lays out. Currently our nations moral code is off balance. Even the Godliest of us all have a hard time fessing up to our creature comforts and un needed debts and so we blame it on chasing the “American Dream”. Its just easier than to try and figure out whats really going on inside of us. Lets stop doing that, lets put life back into what that statement initially was meant to be.For we know our true freedom lies in christ who is ultimatly freedom. That enables us to go to new heights, to change the way we are looking at things. Lets get out of these chains, the poverties of both nation and soul and catch the vision our county was founded on. Taxation without representation was a big deal, it sparked change and led to a freedom our society used to know. Now things are turning, like ourselves, our children have debts attached to them and some arent even born yet. Its time for America to know the roots of the “American Dream”. lets keep it alive. Lets not distort or prevert it. Thank you to all who fought and continue to fight for the Biblical call to have a dream such as this, freedom.

The Top 5 Factors Affecting Group Reproduction

Are you having trouble reproducing, growing or expanding your group, team or business?If you answered affirmatively then you have come to the right place.  We have all heard at one point in our lives or another about a man named Leonardo Pisano Bigollo more commonly know as Fibonacci. He is accredited as being the primary influence as to the reason we use the Arabic Numerals 0-9 and the idea of using the decimal system and Zero as a place older. Fibonacci is more well know because of his solution to a problem brought to him about rabbit reproduction.  Today we find his “Fibonacci Sequence” in everything from nature in the smallest forms to architecture and music and literally everywhere we look. The idea of exponential growth happening within a few short generations of rabbits and any other thing we can think of has long been sought after, dreamt of and planned out with melancholy detail. Many times with regard to our businesses, teams, small church groups, or organizations we find that this massive growth does not happen.  Why?  you ask…  I’m so glad you asked!

Several months ago I finished a book titledExponential: How You and Your Friends Can Start a Missional Church Movement Exponential by Dave and Jon Ferguson. I highly recommend this book.  It is targeted toward church growth but I find that the principles found within can be applied to almost any group or team.  The Ferguson brothers refer to a study done by Joel Comiskey in the Book Home Cell Group Explosion in which this topic of group reproduction is tackled and explained.

First, let’s talk about 3 categories or factors that do not have any effect on the group’s reproduction.

1. The leader’s gender, social class, age, marital status, and education are not factors effecting the ability to reproduce the group.

2. The leader’s personality type was not a factor either.

3. The Leader’s Spiritual gifting also was not a factor in reproduction effectiveness.

If none of those factors affect the reproduction of the group, then what does?  According to Comiskey there are five factors that DO affect the ability of the leader to effectively reproduce a group!

1. THE LEADER’S PRAYER LIFE

Regardless of your spiritual beliefs or church background I challenge you to consider this before I continue; Research has proven over hundreds of years, on every continent, and in every culture studied that prayer does increase the likelihood or odds of something happening in favor of those who are praying.  With that being said I’ll continue.  The one factor that seemed to have the biggest impact in the study was how much time the leader spent in prayer about the group and it’s people.  in addition to prayer the study indicated that the devotional life of the leader was consistently in the top 3 most important variables. I highly suggest that you consider the importance of prayer and begin implementation immediately! Dont’ delay!

2. THE LEADER’S SETTING GOALS TO MULTIPLY

“Leaders who know their goal and know when their groups are planning to reproduce consistently reproduce their groups more often than leaders who do not know their goal.” I could not have said it better myself.  There are actually two key principles in this one and I believe if we take a closer look you will agree.  Notice that there must first be a goal set.  The other factor here I would suggest is hidden in the word “multiply”.  Notice that the word is not “addition”. SetMagic of Thinking Big Cover your goal high and lofty. As the old saying goes ” If you shoot for the moon and miss, you’ll land among the stars.” Start with a big dream. Imagine how big it could be. I would suggest another book to help you with this one. The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, Ph.D. It’s your turn to think big and set your goals to match!

3. THE LEADER’S RECEIVING EFFECTIVE TRAINING

Comiskey’s research further indicated that leader’s who felt they had been well-trained to reproduce did so more rapidly although this training was not as important or as effective as the prayer life of the leader.  This solidified in my mind the need for a world-class training system but more importantly the need to instill in each of the leaders under me, the importance of that prayer life. I am very thankful that the LIFE business provides that world-class training system!

4. THE GROUP’S EVANGELISTIC EFFORTS

This is a mere numbers game. The research shows that if there are more people visiting, there will be a faster reproduction.  call it a word-of-mouth campaign, advertising, door-to-door or whatever you team or business utilizes. The more people you come in contact with, the more likely you are to experience growth. If you are a small group or team trying to grow your numbers, the key will be for each person to get out and invite more people. A culture with kind of evangelistic effort must be started and developed by the leader. Leading by example goes a long way here!  Try it. I dare you!

5. THE GROUP’S OUTSIDE MEETINGS

Believe it or not but when the group starts to have meetings after the meetings outside of the daily routine, there  is a team functionality that developes for beyond what the leader can do with the normal group activities. This is what they refer to as the “Fun Factor”.  This one of the great cultures that have been developed with in the many different teams all across the LIFE business where our motto is “Have Fun, Make Money, and Make a Difference”.   The study shows that groups who get together outside of the normal activities “just for fun” are far more likely to reproduce quickly than those groups not having “outside” meetings.

 

I will end with this quote from the book; “Small groups are the epicenter of community in life…”  Your effectiveness as a leader will depend on how good you get at reproducing small groups using the 5 tools I just gave you.  Community is key.  Go build yours today!

An entrepreneur must be a leader. Why? Because he or she must build and lead teams of people to accomplish the task, satisfy the customer, and do so at a price that leaves profit for the team members. In other words, ineffective leaders soon prove to be ineffective entrepreneurs because the customer isn’t satisfied nor the teams paid well. Nonetheless, many would-be entrepreneurs start business while ignoring the importance of leadership to the health of their enterprise.

Entrepreneurs should enter into markets where they feel they can satisfy the customers better than their competitors. For instance, Jack Welch, in his early days, was called “Neutron Jack” because he refused to be in a business sector where he couldn’t improve to either #1 or #2. His philosophy of business led him to get out of markets where he couldn’t be the best, and move into markets where he could be the best, thus maximizing profits for the company and ensuring employment for the workers. Incidentally, few seem to understand that only a profitable company can maintain its workers. Since profit is the life-blood of any business, when a company is losing money, it’s similar to a patient losing blood.  In both instances, death results if the bleeding isn’t checked.

Accordingly, leaders are constantly studying the vital signs of their business, ensuring the business is not bleeding to death. In fact, leaders must be PDCA champions, constantly making adjustment in the areas where it can have the most impact. They don’t just change things to make change, however. Instead, they listen, study, and analyze until they determine which area of change could have the biggest impact on the bottom line. Then they do something unheard of in our modern world, namely, take massive action to drive the team and business forward.

Whenever I study a business, the first question I ask is: Who is the leader? If an effective leader is in charge, he can overcome lack of capital, lack of resources, and still beat competitors who have plenty of both. Why? Because leaders constantly are developing innovative ways to solve problems while managers focus on the same methods that worked before. I love the saying: If it isn’t broke, then break it and make it better.

When my co-founders and I started LIFE Leadership, we did so with little funds or resources, but we had a superbly talented leadership team. I knew that the leadership team would quickly build the leadership products that could compete with any leadership team anywhere. Entrepreneur as exceptional leader

Hans Karl Emil von Mangoldt  (1824-1868) developed the notion that entrepreneurial profit is the rent of ability. He divided entrepreneurial income into three parts: (1) a premium on uninsured risks; (2) entrepreneur interest and wages, including only payments for special forms of capital or productive effort that did not admit of exploitation by anyone other than the owner; and (3) entrepreneurial rents or payments for differential abilities or assets not held by anyone else. The first part is a return on risk taking; the second part from capital use and production effort, and the third part from ability or asset specificity. Alfred Marshall (1842-1924) carried forward Mangoldt’s notion of rent-of-ability by adding the element of leadership to “entrepreneurial” responsibilities. Marshall’s entrepreneurs “must be a natural leader of men who can choose assistants wisely but also exercise a general control over everything and preserve order and unity in the main plan of business. In fulfilling this organizational function, the entrepreneur must always be “on the lookout for methods that promise to be more effective in proportion to their cost than methods currently in use”. Marshall noted that not everyone had the innate ability to perform this entrepreneurial role as these abilities are so great that very few persons can exhibit all of them in a very high degree. Accordingly, he termed the entrepreneurial rents specifically as a “quasi-rent”, which is a return for exceptional natural abilities, which are not made by human effort, and enable the entrepreneur to obtain a surplus income over what ordinary persons could expect for similar exertions following similar investments of capital and labour in their education and start in life.

A Lone Voice Crying in the Wilderness of Economics
Editor’s Note: The following is an excerpt from Orrin Woodward’s book, Resolved: 13 Resolutions for Life.
Ludwig Von Mises, an Austrian economist, stood for truth against the economic trends of his day.
He defended free enterprise and classic liberalism when nearly all were stumbling over each other to receive perks and preferment offered by governments looking for professors to teach the joys of government intervention and economic controls.
Many economists understood intellectually the errors in the Keynesian policies, knowing that government spending sprees would only lead to massive debt and unemployment.
But through choosing preferment over principles, the Keynesian economists surrendered their convictions for conveniences, riding the Keynesian wave to career advancement.
Conversely, Mises, steeled by his character and resolve, was, at first, a lone voice crying in the wilderness. He refused to go along with the deceit and repeatedly pointed out the logical fallacies inherent in Keynesian economic policies.
Persecuted by Statists
This wasn’t a popular stand in the first half of the twentieth century. In fact, Ludwig and his wife, Margit, barely made it out of Europe ahead of the Nazi blitzkrieg.
Jorg Hulsmann, author of The Last Knight of Liberalism, writes:
“Mises was two months shy of his fifty-ninth birthday. He was on the invaders’ list of wanted men. Two years earlier, they had ransacked his Vienna apartment, confiscating his records, and freezing his assets. Mises then hoped to be safe in Geneva. Now nowhere in Europe seemed safe. Not only was he a prominent intellectual of Jewish descent; he was widely known to be an arch-enemy of National Socialism and of every other form of socialism. Some called him the last knight of liberalism.
“He had personally steered Austria away from Bolshevism, saved his country from the level of hyperinflation that destroyed inter-war Germany, and convinced a generation of young socialist intellectuals to embrace the market. Now he was a political refugee headed for a foreign continent.
“The couple arrived in the United States with barely any money and no prospects for income. Mises’s former students and disciples had found prestigious positions in British and American universities (often with his help), but Mises himself was considered an anachronism. In an age of growing government and central planning, he was a defender of private property and an opponent of all government intervention in the economy. Perhaps worst of all, he was a proponent of verbal logic and realism in the beginning heyday of positivism and mathematical modeling. No university would have him. Margit began to train as a secretary.”
Over the next decade, husband and wife would slowly rebuild their lives in America with Mises find new allies in his fight for truth.
In the midst of these challenges, he published his most important book, Human Action. It would earn him a following whose admiration and devotion were beyond anything he had known in Europe.
With his courage and logic, Mises identified the long-term consequences of socialist and fascist errors, strengthening the growing intellectual resistance to Statism.
Mises was a man of character, a man without a price, living his life by Virgil’s Roman motto, “Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito,” which translates, “Do not give in to evil, but proceed ever more boldly against it.”
Mises proceeded to do just that. The late Dean of the Austrian School, Murray Rothbard, one of the greatest economic minds and good friend of Mises wrote:

“Holding these views, and hewing to truth indomitably in the face of a century increasingly devoted to statism and collectivism, Mises became famous for his intransigence in insisting on a non-inflationary gold standard and on laissez-faire.

“Effectively barred from any paid university post in Austria and later in the United States, Mises pursued his course gallantly. As the chief economic adviser to the Austrian government in the 1920s, Mises was single-handedly able to slow down Austrian inflation; and he developed his own private seminar which attracted the out­standing young economists, social scientists, and philosophers throughout Europe.
As the founder of the neo-Austrian School of economics, Mises’s business cycle theory, which blamed inflation and depressions on inflationary bank credit encouraged by Central Banks, was adopted by most younger economists in England in the early 1930s as the best explanation of the Great Depression.”
At a time when the crowd was streaming toward Statism, whether in the form of Nazism, Fascism, Socialism, Communism, New Deal, Fair Deal, etc., Mises rejected the blatant errors in each, overcoming the tides of the time through thinking deeply on the underlying principles.
Regardless of the personal and professional cost, Mises refused to teach what he knew wasn’t true, even though opportunities abound if would would go with the economic flow. Mises could not do this and maintain his intellectual integrity, for he knew in his heart that Keynesianism was wrong.
Rothbard again, shares:
“For Mises was able to demonstrate (a) that the expansion of free markets, the division of labor, and private capital investment is the only possible path to the prosperity and flourishing of the human race; (b) that socialism would be disastrous for a modern economy because the absence of private ownership of land and capital goods prevents any sort of rational pricing, or estimate of costs, and (c) that government intervention, in addition to hampering and crippling the market, would prove counter-productive and cumulative, leading inevitably to socialism unless the entire tissue of interventions was repealed.”
Today, Mises looks prophetic having predicted the severe economic disruptions in the economy by society’s acceptance of Keynesian errors.
With the West economic malaise in full bloom, gutted through years of inflationary spending and soaring debt loads, nearly everyone now recognizes that Mises was right all along.
Few will ever comprehend the level of courage it required for Mises to sustain the personal and professional abuses he received. Yet somehow, he never wavered in his belief that time would eventually prove him right, even if that meant from the grave.
Intellectual truth meant more to Mises than anything else, because a person of character understands that following truth is more important than rewards, recognition, or professional perks.
Time has certainly proven Mises right.  Government intervention, far from being a modern day elixir, has damaged economies and markets wherever its poison has been imbibed.
Sadly though, once economic error sinks into the mind of the body politic, rooting it out takes time and effort, but it must be done. As Mises stated in Human Action,
“Economics deals with society’s fundamental problems; it concerns everyone and belongs to all. It is the main and proper study of every citizen.”
All citizens should study the history of political, economic and spiritual freedoms, the very freedoms that undergird the liberties enjoyed today in the West.
Follow the Money
If Mises pointed out the fallacies of inflationist and socialist policies in the 1920’s, then why did the West proceed for nearly a century on a spending and borrowing binge, resulting in the near bankruptcy for most governments of the West?  The answer revolves around character, or more pointedly, lack of character.
“Follow the money” (FTM) is the motive behind most politician’s questionable behaviors.  FTM along with its brother “something for nothing” (SFN) combine to make a powerful force in overcoming principles and character wherever they are allowed to prosper unchecked.
Since most people have a price, educators and politicians FTM into supporting Keynesian policies and are rewarded for selling out their character and supporting faulty economics rationalizing their sell out by the pot of gold offered to them at the end of the rainbow.
This behavior created the current that Mises opposed in his battle for truth against errors. Mises insisted on a gold standard to end politicalinduced inflation.
Inflation: The Hidden Tax
Politicians sell out their character for inflation because they are always short of two things in modern democracies – money to buy votes and votes to obtain further money.
In the past, a politician could not spend government money unless he raised revenues through increased taxes. Since tax hikes were highly unpopular, he feared losing his elected position; therefore, he restrained his appetite for spending in order to remain popular with his voters.
Today, however, through the “joys” of Keynesian economics, this check to poor behavior is gone. Politicians can now spend more money than taxes raise indefinitely, without having to even suggest increasing taxes.
They do this by inflating the money supply through printing fiat paper money (monopoly money), calling it legal tender. Keynesian policies have given Western governments an unlimited money supply to buy further votes without raising taxes, thus avoiding the ire of the fooled electorate.
The inflated money loses its monetary value as it’s diluted within the economy, but Keynesian politicians don’t seem to mind. They are willing to sacrifice the citizen’s wealth through inflation for their personal benefit in money and votes.
What makes inflationary policy so devious is that it isn’t easily understood by the people. Politicians hide behind their Keynesian soundbites while in office, then leave a bankrupt governments as their legacy, long after they are retired.
Indeed, Keynesian economics provided an amenable world-view for current politicians because it condones their SFN inflationary money policies (a secret tax on citizen’s money) without having to risk an election day disaster.
Keynesians can even proclaim to their voters that they didn’t raise taxes, yet secretly they inflate the money supply which is taxing everyone and hurting those most who live on a fixed income and cannot afford the higher prices that inflation produces.
Most politicians, however, are not concerned with the citizens’ long-term wealth, focused instead, upon their short-term need of money and votes to get reelected. In the politician’s mindset, why worry about the country’s long-term viability when he will be out of office and not responsible for the crash?
Politicians quickly learn the game, pandering to the needs of the current voters, even promising more benefits to them, ignoring the long-term consequences of their irresponsible behavior. Their concern for being elected today trumps the downside damage to the country years, if not decades, hence.
Nonetheless, John Maynard Keynes, understood the long-term consequences of his policies, but when confronted, he answered, “In the long run, we are all dead.”
A humorous quip perhaps, but avoiding the underlying issue. Any system that provides current politicians access to future tax dollars in order to buy an election today is immoral on its face.
Indeed, both parties become bidders of other people’s money, promising gifts to current constituents to be paid for by future tax payers, many not yet even born.
When a person comprehends this point, he will understand why Mises was persecuted so vehemently, because he pointed out the illicit nature of the alliance between the State and the Keynesian economic professors, refusing to go along with the inflationary charade parade at the tax-payers expense.
The economists sell out their character for comfort, money, and power gained through supporting popular Keynesian policies. Individuals, in the pursuit of gain, can advance by writing, teaching, and supporting Keynesian theories of government intervention.
But why do most Universities support government intervention in the economy?  Can you say FTM?  Who is funding nearly every universities in America and the Western world?  Is it the same Western governments who benefit from the Universities teaching the flawed Keynesian economics?
The same government, who partners with educators, convincing the masses of the benefit of Keynesian inflationary policies, then rewards the educators through money grants, prestigious university posts, and government advisory roles in the Statist governments. All the professor has to do is promote the popular Keynesian policies to move ahead.
If a person were to FTM, it flows something like this in a simplistic rendition:
  1. government prints paper money,
  2. stealing value from all Americans,
  3. taking some of the money to reward the economic educators (doctrinaires), who write mighty tomes (propaganda) in support of said governments,
  4. creating a virtuous cycle of advancement for exploiters in both the political and educational fields.
All of these benefits are paid for by the masses, who being ignorant of the scheme, merely wonder why it becomes tougher every year to make a living.
Politicians win by spending money that doesn’t belong to them; economists win by receiving advancements through teaching flawed doctrine; the citizens lose by declining wealth and opportunities, surrendering “we the people” to “we the exploited.”
Mises pointed out the scheme and refused to participate, paying the price for his character-based stand, blackballed from every major university teaching post even though he is recognized as one of the greatest economists of all-time.
Bankrupting the West
Young and impressionable students, not trained to recognize the fallacies of Keynesianism, become susceptible to the propaganda, despite the fact that after five thousand years of recorded history, Statist policies have never worked anywhere.
Even the Kings of Propaganda, both Hitler and Lenin, would be proud of the level of deceit here. Hitler taught, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it,” along with, “How fortunate for leaders that men do not think.”  Not to be outdone, Lenin espoused, “A lie told often enough becomes truth.”
If economists are rewarded for following the company line, and the companies, in this case, are funded by the government, then it doesn’t take a grand conspiracy theory, but merely an understanding of FTM and SFN, to see why our present economic policies support further government interventions regardless of whether they are bankrupting the Western Nations or not.
What other valid explanation could explain the United States multi-trillion dollar national debt?
It’s hard for anyone to make a character-based stand in the workplace when the boss rewards the bad behaviors and punishes the good ones. People are left in a moral quandary, pitting their money against their morals.
Millions of people surrender their morals for money, engulfing the world in darkness. But when one person sets his soul on fire with truth, his light radiates a path out of the darkness.
This is exactly what Ludwig Von Mises did: He lit a path out of the darkness for others to follow.
Where is the next generation of men and women willing to set their soul on fire for truth?
Where are the courageous citizens, who cannot tolerate falsehoods any longer, who bravely choose to live by Virgil’s quote, “do not give in to evil, but proceed ever more boldly against it”?

RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions for LIFE (Part 2)

Resolved-BookOne of the absolute BEST leadership books I have ever read is RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions For LIFE by Orrin Woodward! Orrin Woodward is a NewYork Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Money Magazine, and Business Weekly best selling author! As a side note: He has a new book  released on April 16th titled LeaderShift Co-authored with Oliver DeMille.  Resolutions were commonplace in our culture during the time of the founding of our country.  Many factors have contributed to the decline in our practice of resolutions.  I want to encourage you join a growing number of people who are taking this idea seriously.  As a leader or someone who wants to be a bigger or better leader I cannot emphasize your need to read and implement the information in this book.  Let me briefly cover the resolutions.

6) Resolved: I resolve to keep score in the game of life (Keeping Score)

Orrin begins the chapter with the following statement: “I know that the scoreboard forces me to check and confront the results, making the needed adjustments in order to win.” In engineering terms, this resolution encompasses the C and A parts of the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Adjust) process.  “The CHECK step is the scoreboard of life”. If you are not getting the results you want in life you may need to check the scoreboard and then ADJUST. By confronting brutal reality you will find that your own self-delusion is washed away exposing your own personal success. It’s the only way.  Orrin says “Success is practically assured when a person realizes that he is responsible for his own perpetual personal development process.” Success is simply the PDCA journey of learning. This quote by Orrin sums it all up so perfectly; “The goal is to improve both personally and professionally, closing the gap between where one is and where one desires to be.”

7) Resolved: I resolve to develop the art and science of friendship (Friendship)

Few people have ever taken the time to write about the art of friendship and the importance and impact that a true friendship can have within our own personal lives or on society as a whole.  One of the great friendships that Orrin discusses in this resolution is the friendship between J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Orrin gives examples of how these two great men exemplified the eight principles of true friendship. 1) True friends form around shared insights. 2) true friends accept one another. 3) True friends approve one another. 4) True friends appreciate one another . 5) True friends listen with empathy. 6) True friends celebrate one another’s success. 7) True friends are trustworthy. 8) True friends are loyal.   True friendship is a lost are in today’s society. In 1985 the average person had 2.94 very close friends according to the American Sociological Review. That number dropped by nearly one-third down to 2.08 friends in 2004.  In the last 9 years I can only imagine how low that number has dropped.  We can change that tide by choosing to be a better friend. By making an effort to be a better friend, you will find that more people want to be your friend.  This is something I love about the LIFE business; real community, real friends, real fun!

8) Resolved: I resolve to develop financial intelligence (Financial Management)Finance Pack

“As a person moves from private achievements into public achievements, he will find his ability to make money increases.”  This is truly one of the most important areas that we each need to learn and improve our understanding in.  Orrin says Financial Literacy and management is as valuable, if not more so, than the ability to earn income.   We must understand some basic principles such as:  Debt enslaves you, Interest can work for or against you, Make more than you spend and spend less than you make.  These principles and more can be found, learned and applied in your life to help you achieve  the next level in getting your finances under control.  A great resource for this is the Maximize Your Finances Pack from LIFE. I have personally seen the results from this pack’s information being applied in a person’s life.  I have seen results in own personal finances from applying these principles.  I encourage you to do the same.  This resolution is THAT important!

9) Resolved: I resolve to develop the art and science of leadership (Leadership Resolution)

Regardless of the community you are involved in at work, church, social groups, or sports teams, everything rises or falls based on the leadership therein!  My goal through this blog is to help you in your leadership journey by proving any information that can help you become a better leader.  Orrin compares sports leaders and business leaders; “Leaders in sports win by developing and executing game plans consistently to fulfill the purpose of the organization…. business leadership is similar but with one significant difference. In a Free Enterprise environment, a business leader doesn’t just execute the game plan, he must first creat a game out of his business.” Orrin lays out a simple way to help in this process as he describes the process of treating business as a game to establish leadership.  The steps involved are 1) Define the Game, 2) Track Parameter, 3) Educate Team Parameters, 4) Play and Score Game, 5) Study Score, 6) Make Adjustments in PDCA, Then back to number one and rotate.  One of the best descriptions of leadership is found in the example of a current in swimming pool. If one person starts creating a current by moving in one direction and others begin to jump in and help move the current in that one direction, eventually anyone who joins the group will get swept along with the current without any effort at all. The converse is true as well. If a leader wants to change the direction of an existing culture or current, He will face tremendous force against him at first.  This is the truest test of a leader: to face an existing current and tenaciously jump in to change it and influence others to join in helping to change the direction.

Are you sure you want to work for someone else?

The following is an article I found on the FIX-Report .  It speaks so well to the importance of learning better information in order to get better results out of life.   Please enjoy.

“What do you want to do when you grow up?” We’ve all heard this question, or perhaps even asked it numerous times, but have you ever considered what the question is asking? Typically, the question is really asking, “What do you want to do for a job?” A large portion of our society automatically assumes that you should pick something you want to do, go to college to learn how to do what you’ve picked, then go get a job in your chosen field.

To question this wisdom is near heresy, but that’s what I’m doing to do. Why? Because the results from the “go to school, get good grades, get a safe, secure job” advice are in, and they don’t look good.

Before I dive into the meat of the post, here’s a quick disclaimer: I am not against employment. There are many important roles. My reason for posting this post is to (hopefully) put a crack in the conventional wisdom that, whether consciously or unconsciously, seeks to push our youth into college and employment. This post is aimed at those that DO NOT have a passion for their job, which seems to be the vast majority of people.

An Employee’s Lifestyle

Since most people don’t think that there is any alternative to working until retirement/death, they never even question how much of their life that they are spending to make a buck. The reality is that most people spend a tremendous amount of their life doing something that they really don’t have a passion for just to make some money.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey, the average employed American spends just over nine hours a day working and commuting, followed by sleeping at just under eight hours. Check out the graphic below to see how the average employed American’s spends their time.

The normal retirement age in the U.S. is 67. To be conservative, let’s assume that the normal person starts working full-time at 22 years of age. That’s 45 years! Based on the above time study, that means that the average employee will, assuming a 5 day work week, spend 107,640 hours working, 125,651 hours sleeping, and 96,725 hours doing essential things like grooming, cleaning, eating, grocery shopping, etc, which leaves just 64,184 hours of leisure (or time with your kids/family) left. Here’s how it breaks down:

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to work the best hours of the best years of my life for a paycheck, especially when the paycheck is rather weak.

The BLS also publishes median incomes by age. What you’ll see here is that for all that work, the effort does not pay off at the end.

Graphs like that make me wonder why retirement was ever called the golden years. It looks to me like they’re the tin-foil years at best.

Seeing information like this really just confirms the feeling of hopelessness that most of the working populous feels; the feeling of not being able to get ahead.

The good news is that this doesn’t have to be your reality. There are many ways out. The principles to follow that will get you onto the correct path are as simple as asking the question I started this post with in a different manner. Instead of picking our ‘Do’ first, we need to define the lifestyle that we want to have. How much of that leisure/family time do you want? How would you like your income to be at 35? 55? 75? Ask yourself, “What do I want my lifestyle to be like?” The next part is to find someone that has the lifestyle that you’d like. This step is perhaps the hardest, but is worth the effort. The last step is simply to ‘do’ what the person from the previous step coaches you to do. The best thing I’ve found to help people through all three steps is LIFE.

You will most likely find that to get results that are far different than the picture painted above, the coaching you’ll receive will have a foundation in three very important principles of wealth creation:

  1. Delayed Gratification
  2. Long Term Vision
  3. Utilization of the power of compounding

If you follow those principles, find the right mentors and do the work required, you will live a life that most will never experience. You DO NOT have to work for someone else the rest of your life. You DO NOT have to work until you die to make ends meet. Freedom is yours for the taking.

You have the power to define your lifestyle, so start today!

The Man Who Killed the Bank

In his historic veto address, Jackson declared war on the wealthy aristocracy attempting to subvert the American Republic.

His veto address should be read by everyone concerned with freedom and equality of opportunity. Jackson, in part, stated:

“It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their selfish purposes.

“Distinctions in society will always exist under every just government. Equality of talents, of education, or of wealth cannot be produced by human institutions.

“In the full enjoyment of the gifts of Heaven and the fruits of superior industry, economy, and virtue, every man is equally entitled to protection by law; but when the laws undertake to add to these natural and just advantages artificial distinctions, to grant titles, gratuities, and exclusive privileges, to make the rich richer and the potent more powerful, the humble members of society-the farmers, mechanics, and laborers-who have neither the time nor the means of securing like favors to themselves, have a right to complain of the injustice of their Government.

“There are no necessary evils in government. Its evils exist only in its abuses. If it would confine itself to equal protection, and as Heaven does its rains, shower its favors alike on the high and the low, the rich and the poor, it would be an unqualified blessing.”

Jackson’s veto was a shot across the financial-elites broadside and could not remain unanswered, especially when the messenger was the sitting President of the United States of America.

Interestingly, Jackson was not a novice in his understanding of the ill-effects of paper money. In fact, he understood the debilitating effects of inflationary money (having studied at length the South Sea Bubble) better than many of the Eastern elites opposing him. He knew that paper money not backed by bullion was fraud upon the many for the benefit of the few.

Biddle, finally comprehending Jackson couldn’t be bought or bullied declared war, pulling out every political weapon in his extensive arsenal. Biddle purchased propaganda pieces in the newspapers in an attempt to refute Jackson’s charges and rally support for the Bank. For instance, he wrote to one editor,

“If you will cause the articles I have indicated and others which I may prepare to be inserted in the newspaper in question, I will at once pay to you one thousand dollars.”

A thousand dollars then is equivalent to twenty-five thousand today, certainly enough to bribe most editors into action.

Biddle’s relentless assault only strengthened Jackson’s belief that the Bank’s influence was unhealthy and detrimental to a republican government. In truth, money and power are just two sides of the same coin.

Consequently, where money gathers, power is soon to follow and where power gathers, money is soon to follow.

Daniel Webster, the famed lawyer and presidential contender from New England, championed the Bank’s cause, becoming one of the Bank’s most ardent supporters. Ironically, although Webster had originally opposed the Bank’s charter, he found Bank religion when Biddle offered him a healthy legal retainer to aid in the re-charter movement. In the midst of the Bank battle, Webster wrote the a revealing missive to Biddle,

“I believe my retainer has not been renewed or refreshed as usual. If it be wished that my relation to the Bank should be continued, it may be well to send me the usual retainers.”

Webster, along with the champion of the statists American System, Henry Clay, supported the financial-elites in their fight against Jackson as perks, power, and recognition were sure to follow with the Bank’s blessing.

Webster, in fact, launched a lengthy attack on the Jackson’s policies, blasting his veto of the Bank. Biddle, in addition, bought other influencers in Congress to oppose Jackson’s measures, dividing Jackson’s supporters into two camps.

The first group desired the President to yield on the issue, hoping to maintain government decorum. In contrast, the second, encourage the President to finish what he started and end the unholy alliance between Big Banks and Big Government.

Jackson’s popularity suffered from the stream of paid propaganda unleashed by editors congenial to Biddle’s seemingly endless financial largesse. Indeed, numerous diatribes against Jackson’s policy permeated the press on a weekly basis.

Despite the funded politicians in Congress and rabid press editors willing to do Biddle’s bidding, he still stored one more ace up his sleeve.

Fearing that Jackson would remove the Treasury deposits from his Bank, starving the bank of the lifeblood of money necessary to maintain its special power base, Biddle declared to Webster,

“They will not dare to remove them. If the deposits are withdrawn, it will be a declaration of war which cannot be recalled.”

Following through on his promise, Biddle launched a campaign of loan closures across America, causing financial panic among the state banks and business community.

They were forced to either pay back their loans or collapse into insolvency. State banks and businesses screamed for relief, appealing to Jackson end the ward and submit to the Bank’s recharter.

Misreading the President again, the numerous bank and business closings only steeled Jackson’s resolve to end Biddle’s undue influence in the American economy.

Many state leaders, awakened by the inordinate power that the Bank held over the economy, began to recognize the truth of Jackson’s veto claims.

In truth, the President believed that any power capable of causing a panic of this magnitude was not healthy for the freedoms of the American people. He denounced the Bank’s action to his cabinet,

“The Bank has by degrees obtained almost entire dominion over the circulating medium, and with it, power to increase or diminish the price of property and to levy taxes on the people in the shape of premiums and interest to an amount only limited by the quantity of paper currency it is enabled to issue.”

Jackson understood the role that money-interest can play in causing inflation and market cycles; unfortunately, this understanding seems lost on today’s politicians and our Federal Reserve System.

Biddle once boasted to an intimate,

“In half an hour I can remove all the constitutional scruples in the District of Columbia. Half a dozen presidencies’ — of bank branches — a dozen cashierships, fifty clerkships, a hundred directorships, to worthy friends who have no character and no money.”

Clearly, Biddle was playing for keeps, understanding that money buys power and power produces money. Even in the midst of the Federal Government’s withdrawal of Treasury Deposits, Biddle remained confident of his ultimate victory, writing,

“My own view of the matter is simply this…The [instigators] of this last assault on the Bank regret and are alarmed by it. But the ties of party allegiance can only be broken by the actual conviction of existing distress in the community. Nothing but the evidence of suffering abroad [that is, in the country as a whole] will produce any effect in Congress…This worthy President thinks that because he has scalped Indians and imprisoned judges, he is to have his way with the Bank. He is mistaken.”

Biddle appears to have succumbed fully to the corrupting effects of absolute power. His dictatorial thoughts, writings, and actions are on display during this stage of the war. He shared with another confidante,

“My own course is decided, all other banks and all other merchants may break, but the Bank of the United States shall not break.”

Biddle truly believed, that by causing harm and suffering in America, he could control the political leaders of our country.

In hindsight, had it been any other President besides Jackson at this time, he would have been right. Jackson, however, stood his ground and eventually won the Bank war, despite receiving many battle scars along the way.

Re-elected in a landslide, Jackson proved that a person with conviction and character can stand his ground and win, no matter the size of the forces aligned against him.

Boldly, at one point in the battle, Jackson told his Vice-President Martin Van Buren,

“The Bank is trying to kill me. But I will kill it.”

Jackson example demonstrates a leader’s powerful effect upon others.

When a person has the courage to stand strong, he strengthens the spine of others who recognize the truthfulness of his fight between right and wrong.

Courage, just like lack of courage, is contagious. Character is courage and integrity combined. Integrity is identifying what is right and courage is the ability to stand for truth even when it hurts.

Jackson accomplished many things in his life, both militarily and politically. However, I believe his finest hours were in his courageous stand against the Second National Bank.

May today’s leaders learn similar courage in today’s fight against tyranny.

The Man Who Killed The Bank

 

Editor’s Note: The following account of Andrew Jackson’s battle with the Second National Bank, written by Orrin Woodward, is fairly lengthy. This is such a critical story for American citizens to understand that we’ve broken it up into two pieces. Part II will be published tomorrow.
The Man Who Killed the Bank
Part I
Andrew Jackson always a man of strong convictions. He stood by his love of liberty even when it hurt him politically to do so.
It takes courage to stand by one’s convictions, especially when a person is offered peace and financial rewards to surrender them.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear; rather, it’s the acknowledgement that one’s principles are bigger than one’s fears, regardless of the consequences.
In today’s “situational ethics” society, principles are sold out for pragmatism, making courageous stories like Andrew Jackson’s as rare as gold-backed currency.
Consequently, much could be learned by the study of Andrew Jackson’s stand against the “moneyed-interest” drive to re-charter the Second National Bank.
Indeed, through reading Jackson’s battles against the Bank, one yearns to find leaders with similar backbones to break the Federal Reserve monopoly on America’s money.
Let’s examine this historic battle between the President Andrew Jackson of the United States of America versus President Nicholas Biddle of the Second National Bank.
Jackson resided in the thriving American West, witnessing first hand the dire effects of inflationary banking policies in the western land prices.
Jackson learned the salutary lesson of hard money (gold and silver coins) versus the prevalent paper based inflationary policies loved by bankers and wealthy merchants.
Inflationary methods allowed banks to print paper, pretending the paper had value, even thought it wasn’t backed by gold or silver.
Without a check on the banks, like requiring banks to submit gold for paper dollars when requested, one can easily see how banks would fall into the trap of printing more paper than could possibly be redeemed on demand.
Profits for banks can increase greatly in the short term by interest collected on nothing more than paper, causing more money to flow into the marketplace which raises the prices of consumer goods as more printed dollars are available.
The splurge of printed money only corrects itself when consumers become aware of the inflationary policies of banks, quickly requesting gold for their inflated paper dollars before the banks runs out their reserves.
In theory, paper money should be a promissory note, representing gold, but easier to carry on one’s person. The minute the promissory note is not backed by real value (gold, silver etc), it becomes fraudulent with the bank benefiting by printing monopoly money at the expense of all consumers who now own dollars less valuable than before the fraudulent activity.
For example, if we doubled the amount of dollars in circulation today, giving everyone twice as much money as they have currently, each dollar would quickly fall to half of its former value, prices would rise as each person’s dollars bid up the prices in an attempt to purchase the means for living.
Printing money does not produce wealth, but it can benefit the few at the expense of the many, a temptation too lucrative to be left in the hands of government politicians and their wealthy patrons.
When Jackson was elected President of the United States, one of his missions was to end the syndicate of control over America’s money supply by three power hungry groups: foreign interests, big business, and big politicians.
Jackson believed that banks ought to run like any other businesses, having to sink or swim based upon their own business acumen, needing reserves to secure their loans provided.
But when a national bank receives the protection of the federal government to ensure its solvency, this is no longer free enterprise, but a form of fascism where government and business partner, reducing competition amongst banks, and increasing the cost of the entire system.
This would be similar to all automotive companies agreeing to fix prices on cars, certainly improving the profits for manufacturers, while decreasing the downside risk of the manufacturers, all of this, at the expense of the customers.
The Second National Bank received the deposits of the America, ensuring its solvency, providing a special deal for the bank and its investors at the expense of other banks and all customers.
Nicholas Biddle, the president of the Second National Bank, was not alarmed, at first, with Jackson’s rhetoric, having heard many politicians boast of drastic changes when entering office, only to conform into the system when elected.
But Jackson’s character was different, his campaign promises before aligned with his actions after election, necessitating a showdown between the President and the money interest behind the Bank.
Biddle and Jackson were opposites in upbringing and temperament. The former, a scion of a high-society Philadelphia family, did not like the rough and tumble behavior of the American political process. Choosing to avoid the masses, he preferred instead to do his work behind the scenes.
Jackson, on the other hand, loved the volatile political process and was elected by the populist mass of voters across America.
No two people better contrasted the opposing viewpoints in the American political arena. One, a believer in wealth and privilege for the chosen few; the other, an equal opportunity for all to rise based upon merit.
Jackson shared his disdain for the Bank in his first Presidential message proclaiming,

“Both the constitutionality and the expediency of the law creating this bank are well questioned by a large portion of our fellow citizens, and it must be admitted by all that it has failed in the great end of establishing an uniform and sound currency.”

Biddle, however, seemingly unconcerned initially, responded to Jackson’s message with a cool indifference. He wrote of Jackson,

“They should be treated as the honest though erroneous notions of one who intends well.”

Clearly, Biddle did not believe Jackson had the courage or fortitude to fight against the entrenched money-interest feeding off America’s body politic.

Biddle quickly discovered that Jackson’s courage was even greater than his rhetoric, when he confirmed Jackson’s intentions to end the Bank’s charter.
Undaunted, he quickly rallied his political supporters to his cause.
Surprisingly, two of the biggest and brightest political lights, both Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, were enlisted by the Bank in support of the crucial recharter initiative.
With Clay and Webster’s help, the Bank moved for an early renewal of its charter, hoping to force Jackson’s hand before his second term election.
Jackson, the moneyed-interest believed, would not risk his re-election on a veto of the Bank’s charter.
Once again, the special-interest elites had underestimated Jackson courage.
The Bank bill, with Clay and Webster’s support, passed both houses and arrived on Jackson’s desk for approval.
Most people would have bowed to the “inevitable” and approved the bill to ensure his re-election; Jackson however, was not like most people.

13 Resolutions For LIFE (Part 1)

Resolved-BookOne of the absolute BEST leadership books I have ever read is RESOLVED: 13 Resolutions For LIFE  by Orrin Woodward! Orrin Woodward is a NewYork Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Money Magazine, and Business Weekly best selling author! As a side note: He has a new book being released on April 16th titled LeaderShift Co-authored with Oliver DeMille.  Resolutions were commonplace in our culture during the time of the founding of our country.  Many factors have contributed to the decline in our practice of resolutions.  I want to encourage you join a growing number of people who are taking this idea seriously.  As a leader or someone who wants to be a bigger or better leader I cannot emphasize your need to read and implement the information in this book.  Let me briefly cover the resolutions.

The First five resolutions cover personal or private achievements.  Each one builds upon the prior leading into the public achievements, resolutions six thru 9. The final four (No. I’m not talking about basketball) resolutions culminate to build your leadership achievements. These 13 resolutions are designed to be implemented one at a time for one week each, covering 13 weeks or about 90 days or 3 months!  Enter the 90 Day Mental Fitness Challenge (MFC).  This program takes the 13 resolutions and wraps a whole program around your own website with 360 degree feedback and so much more!   The MFC gives you measurable results in a reasonable amount of time!  It is truly life changing! Yes. 1) Resolved: I resolve to discover my God-given purpose  (Purpose)

“Sadly, many will live their entire life without purpose, allowing life to lead them rather than leading their lives.” -Orrin Woodward  We must first find the place where potential and passions intersect with profits in order to find our purpose. God has placed within each person specific passions and a potential to use those passions. When you can find or create an income (profits) to be able to do the things you’re passionate about; That is where your purpose can be found and accomplished.

2) Resolved: I resolve to choose character over reputation anytime they conflict  (Character)

“To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.” – Abraham Lincoln     John Wooden used three principles in his coaching that helped produce solid character in his players.  Those three principles are 1) Never lie.  2) Never cheat. 3) Never steal. The most simple way to start building your own character I found in a great example given in the book.  Start with you alarm clock.  Set it and when it starts buzzing (or playing music or whatever you use with today’s technology) in the morning, DON’T USE THE SNOOZE BUTTON! If you get up when you said you were going to get up without using the snooze button, you start to build character with yourself and you start your days feeling better. You perform better throughout the day as well.   Go ahead and try it…. I dare you!

3) Resolved: I resolve to have a positive attitude in all situations (Attitude)

You’ve heard it said that attitude is everything.  I disagree. It is almost everything but it must have a foundation of good character. You and I have each met people who have had great attitudes but end up in turmoil because of a character flaw. The good news is that a person can work on both at the same time and improve in both.  To help improve your attitude you will first want to turn down the negative voices around you and turn up the positive voices. This will get easier the more you do it. Reframing is a powerful tool one can use.  By looking at a situation and making a choice to find the positive within what may seem a negative situation.   You can choose how you respond to anything.  You may not be able to control what happens to you but you can always choose how you respond.  Quit reacting and start responding. Choose the right response often enough and you will start reacting properly.  Try using Coach Wooden’s rules 1) Never Whine 2) Never Complain and 3) Never make excuses!  If you’re like me you may be thinking that whining and complaining are the same. They are not.  This resolution goes into detail about the differences.

4) Resolved: I resolve to align my conscious (ant) with my subconscious (elephant) mind towards my vision (Programming the Elephant)

I’m going to quote directly from Orrin’s book here because he describes it so precisely. “Author Vince Poscente in The Ant and The Elephant, describes the difference between the conscious and subconscious mind, teaching that the conscious (ant) mind in one second of thinking  stimulates 2,000 neurons, while the sub-conscious (elephant) mind in a second of imagining stimulates four billion neurons.”  Think about this for a second… companies who advertize on tv will spend millions of dollars for a 30 second commercial. Then they play the same commercial over and over and over and over again.  Do you think they understand the power of the sub-conscious?  Of course they do.  Someone is programming your sub-conscious whether you know it or not.  well, now you know it. So, what are you going to do about it?  I would start by eliminating or at least limiting the amount of TV you watch and start picking up some good books, some positive audio recordings and start finding positive people to hang around and spend time with.  These three things; READ, LISTEN, and ASSOCIATE are the biggest game changers for your life and the primary reasons why the LIFE Business is exploding in growth!

5) Resolved: I resolve to develop and implement  a game plan in each area of my life (Game Plan and Do)

Orrin says in this chapter that “success never goes on sale.”  I whole-heartedly agree! “There are three simple, but not easy steps to success” he continues.   1) What do you want?    2) What is the price?  3) Pay it.   The PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Adjust) process he describes is vital to the success process.  In this Resolution, we focus on the Plan and Do steps.  It takes 10,000 deliberate, hours of practice and trying to get better at anything to become a master of the craft.  Using the PDCA process over those 10,000 hours through deliberate practice will get you to the goal.  There will be pain in the process.  No pain, No gain!  you’ve heard the term.  It’s true!  you can ease the pain by turning your work into a game.  You will find that by turning work into a game, it no longer seems like work and you are mentally able to work through a much higher level of pain.

Although in the middle of launching my leadership company LIFE, I happily accepted because I believe the Leadership Factory is a great way to share principles to help the entire Network Marketing and home business field. Given that Tony Cannuli, another great friend and leader, is my co-host, I knew the show would be meet with success. However, I have to say that these interviews have been more impacting than even my highest expectations. Leaders Are Readers

I’m going to make a big assumption here that because you are reading this, YOU have a desire to be a better leader! I’m going to write this to you, the leader. If this is not you, It’s OK. I have faith you still want to be a better husband of wife.  Maybe you just want to be better in one of the 8 F’s of LIFE.life-wheel

I have great news for you!  This will help if you apply the information!

You may have heard it said before that “leaders are readers”.  I’d like to take a moment to remind you of not only the importance of reading but also how to read effectively!   You might be asking  “How does a person read effectively?”  You might be thinking ” I read a book last week and it was a good book. I even learned some things.”  By referring to a person reading effectively,  I am suggesting that you are reading it far more effectively than just running your eyes across the print from page to page untill you’ve finished the book and call it “done”.

Before I go into detail about the ways to read effectively, I want to remind you of how important it is to read.  referring to the saying that I opened with, Would you agree that all great leaders are great readers?   Great!  I thought you would.  Would you also agree with me that not all readers are leaders?   Thank you.  I knew you would.  If all great leaders are great readers, but reading, in-and-of-itself does not make one a great leader then there must be something missing from this equation. Right?  OK. So, now that we have that established, let me ask you another question.  What is that missing piece or pieces?  While you sit there still trying to figure it all out, let me point out that you must become a reader if you want to be a leader. Period.  Whether you have a formal, positional leadership role or in a subordinate role,  a parent or a teenager, a husband or a wife, you are leading someone, in some way!  You are either leading them well or not so well.  It is your choice!   OK. I’ll stop beating you over the head now.  I think you understand the importance by now.

This is where the rubber meets the road as they say!   When it comes to reading, the first thing to ask is “What should I be reading?”  I’m so glad you asked!  Picture this:  you walk into the book store and you are looking for a good book to start reading.  How do you know which one to pick?  Do you just grab one and hope it will give you good information?  Let me ask you a nother question… If you knew somebody had read thousands of books from many genre’s, would it be a good idea to ask that person which book you should start with based on your current status, interests, or struggles?   Of course it would be good idea!

That reason alone is a great big part of why the LIFE business is such a huge success in changing lives.  Orrin Woodward and the other founders of LIFE have gone through the process I just described!   Of the thousands of books each of the founders have read, there are 5 books that are the best, first 5 they recommend.  I have personally taken the advise to read the top 5 books and I can tell you without any hesitation that as a leader, you must get good with people and these 5 books are the best starting point.

Now that you have chosen your books, it’s time to get effective in your reading. Here are the habits you must learn in order to have the most effective reading!

  • Read daily
  • Write the date in the front of each book when you start reading it.
  • Use a pen to underline, highlight, “star”, make comments, and argue with the author as you read.
  • Take notes in the margins.  Especially if you need help with comprehension, summarize each paragraph with a word or short phrase.
  • Review your comments, notes, underlines and etc after you read the book, before you “finnish” the book.
  • Record the date you finished the book in a journal.  (Notice that you should be keeping a journal.)
  • Ask your self, and record in your journal, after you’ve read each book ” what was the author’s key point and how can I apply it?”
  • Read several books from several genre’s at the same time. Such genre’s as politics, classics, economics, theology, philosophy, history, faith, leadership, and success are great places to start.
  •  recommend your favorite books to others and teach them to do the things you just learned.

You can now read the first four chapters of  LeaderShift from the Hachette Book Group.  I can ask you if you are ready for the leader shift, but that question carries no real weight.  The real question I have for you is this: Will you be one of those leaders, one of the ten percent, who will finally stand up and lead?  Our country needs you now more than ever!  Partisan politics don’t work.  Both major parties are spending us into oblivion.  We need true change in direction.  This LeaderShift book gives us all a wake up call!

Is America the Greatest?

Jeff Daniels reluctantly answers the question about America’s greatness in this video.  Caution: The language is not suitable for children! It does such a great job of describing our problem and will hopefully inspire you to action.  If you are like me, this video may cause your eyes to leak and should cause an anger to rise up from within you.  Jeff Daniels, in my opinion shows a glimpse of what I would call a righteous anger as he describes why America is NOT the greatest nation in the world. This video outlines the problem America faces right now.

Here is the good news; LeaderShift is Oliver DeMille and Orrin Woodward’s outline for the solution. Orrin posted this on His blog today and I thought it quite potent. Orrin said he posted “Jeff Daniels video which states the challenge and then the trailer for LeaderShift which responds to the challenge. Yes, America, and the West, have much work to do, but what a great time to be alive and play a part in the LeaderShift!”  I happen to agree with him!

Leading by example

The story has been told regarding an officer during the first American war who gave orders to have some trees cut down because they needed the wood to make a bridge.  The officer had a major problem on his hands though because he had too few men to do the job and the work was getting done at such a slow pace. A commanding-looking officer rode up and spoke to the officer in charge, who was urging his men to work hard but doing nothing himself. “You haven’t enough men for the job, have you?”

“No, sir. we need some help.”

“Why don’t you lend a hand yourself?” asked the man on horseback.

“Me, sir? why, I am a corporal,” replied the officer, looking rather affronted at the suggestion.

“Ah, true, ” quietly replied the other, and getting off his horse he labored with the men until the job was done. Then he mounted again, and as he rode off he said to the officer, ” Corporal, the next time you have a job to put through and too few men to do it, you had better send for the commander-in-chief, and I will come again.

That man was George Washington.

 

Regardless of the position, A leader must be willing to step down from where he sits and get his hands dirty, do the same work as the rest.   The same goes for women in leadership also. There is no gender gap when it comes to being a leader.  The principles of leadership work just the same for both sexes.

In our society today we have an interesting dichotomy where, not only do many who are in positional leadership roles have a strange aversion to actual work, but we also have a large group of people who claim to want the leadership roles but are unwilling to go out perform.

Regardless of where you might be in terms of your current leadership role or lack thereof, you can change today!  No task is too small! Even the most mundane of tasks such as picking up a scrap of paper lying on the floor or taking out the office trash should be opportunities that you are looking for.  If you are in a sales role, you must become a top performer before you will be given any sort of leadership role.

I have never been a part of an organization that had such a culture of success by performance until I met the amazing people involved in the LIFE business.  The best examples of this type of leadership can be found in men like Orrin Woodward and Chris Brady and so many others that been mentored by these two men and the other founders of LIFE.

LIFE Business Story

The LIFE Business is an ongoing story. Each person who joins the LIFE community chooses which part, whether large or small, he or she will play. What happens when a world-renowned best-selling author is introduced to LIFE and begins studying the history of this movement? The short answer is a compelling story of hopes, dreams, struggles, failures, perseverance, and finally victory. Thankfully, he has decided to write up the story of LIFE. In my opinion, it is great timing because never before has a LeaderShift been more needed than now. Indeed, this is exactly what the LIFE community intends to do – create a leadershift! Here is a portion of the introduction in his upcoming book about LIFE. What part will you play in the story?

LIFE Business Introduction

The fate of free enterprise is very much in doubt. By the first decade of the 21st Century, critics of free enterprise and modern democratic freedom had convinced many people that free enterprise is an outdated system, one that cares more about corporate profits than economic opportunity for everyone.

This problem was the result of a split between two approaches to free enterprise, the traditional type of freedom based on the cooperation of idealists and realists to share profits so everyone has the chance to succeed financially, versus a more cutthroat corporatist emphasis on what we might call “Skeptical Pragmatism,” or doing whatever is deemed most profitable regardless of who it hurts, and keeping most of the profits for a few elites.

In the midst of this growing divide, it was perhaps inevitable that new companies would arise to challenge the shift toward corporatism, and to once again champion traditional free enterprise. It is against this backdrop that the story of the LIFE business began.

It is a story set in a business world created by the likes of Jack Welch, Sam Walton, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. I will state my almost preposterous thesis here and now, as controversial as it may seem: Had history developed just slightly differently, the other names on this list would be those who created and expanded network marketing.

Indeed, network marketing should have been as big as WalMart. It would have been, except too many people at the top asked themselves, “Why would we only take a 10% profit when we could take 30%?”

The story of the LIFE business is the exact opposite. The top leaders asked, “Why would we take 30% of the profit when we could earn 10% and pass the rest to others in the business?”

Why would anyone do this? Did they miss the memo? Did they skip the unofficial lessons of many prestigious business schools?

Did they misunderstand capitalism? Or were they just less experienced, ambitious or visionary than their competitors on Wall Street?

This is the story of a company that dared to do it differently, to apply Sam Walton-like thinking to network marketing. Moreover, instead of soap, health drinks or other typical network marketing products, this is the story of a company that chose to build its central product line around the most American of exports—leadership.

This is not a story of perfect men or women, or a feel-good tale of continual success without major difficulties. Far from it. This is a story of men and women, ordinary individuals who faced extraordinary challenges with hard work, resilience, and, above all, persistence.

It is a story of people who believed in an idea, and who refused to let it go—even when it almost cost them everything. It is a story of a few men and women who would not bend to the “normal” business trends that created elitism and corporatism in the modern economy. Some may say it is a story of courage, while others might argue that more “sophisticated” businessmen wouldn’t have so stubbornly held to their ideals and risked it all.

But whatever else it is, this is a story about families, friendships, and principles. In a way, it would more naturally fit into the storylines of past centuries, where leaders were expected to stand up, stand out, take on the establishment and blaze new trails based on firmly-held beliefs. In our modern world of political correctness, group therapy, management by committee, and the drive to “fit in” and pursue popularity at all costs, the concept of standing up against the system because “it’s the right thing to do” may seem amusingly archaic to some people.

Yet that is exactly how LIFE came about. This is the story of a leader, indeed of a team of leaders, who set out to build a widespread community of leaders. And while such a story may feel anachronistic in the 21st Century, it may just be the type of story that will redeem this generation.

Could it be that the “success bias” of our modern world is desperately in need of what Stephen Covey called “the character ethic?” Do we live in a world where the most important leadership principle is a desperately-needed acknowledgement that character counts? If so, the story of the LIFE business is a story for our times.

It is a story unfinished, however. The more time I spent interviewing the main characters, researching and studying the events, documents and details of this story, the more I felt that writing this story was like writing about Sam Walton in the 1960s, before WalMart was a worldwide phenomenon. While the future of LIFE remains to be seen, the unique beginning of this business is a story worth telling in its own right. To paraphrase Santayana, the future remains in the future, and the best we can do is learn (hopefully) from the past.

Whatever your business or career, your level of education or status in society, the story of the LIFE business is a case study of what can happen when an ancient set of leadership principles (based on idealism, frugality, hard work and integrity) are applied in a modern business environment dominated by pragmatism. Every modern leader struggles with this very challenge, and this story is therefore deeply relevant for today’s leaders in every sector and field.
